Did People Cause Global Climate Change? The debate on global warming and global climate change has been going on for several decades. One group is of the opinion that man in the name of technological progress has actually caused damage to the environment and was the reason of the global climate change. The other group believes that global change is a phenomenon that has been in progress for thousands of years and that it is nothing new to worry about. There have been heated arguments and discussions on both camps, but neither is willing to back down or come to a resolution. Even the various theories proposed by scientists on what might happen in the future based on past data seem to be contradictory. Some theorize that global warming might lead to melting snow caps, which will result in sea levels rise in all the oceans. Others theorize that global warming can trigger another ice age. Still, people say that these things are part of a repetitive cycle and that past data shows rises and drops in global temperature over thousands of years. There are others who even go to the extent of saying that global warming is nothing but a scam. They say that global warming proponents can earn a lot of money through several methods by playing on people’s fears. Imagine if a new procedure were developed that could lead not only to a cure for cancer, but would provide an unlimited source of organ donors and could lead to the first effective treatment of nerve damage. Now adding to this scenario, imagine our government was taking action to ban this new procedure because of a few myths and exaggerations. This scenario is true and is taking place with human cloning at this very moment. If action is not taken, this crowning achievement of medical science could be lost forever. It all began with the team from the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland led by Dr. Ian Wilmut. The National Bioethics Advisory Commission wonders if a cloned human will be quot;regarded as less of a personquot; and treated as a scientific specimen rather than a human being (29). The media makes quot;inflated claimsquot; and talks of so-called quot;superhumansquot; which will take over the world (Allen B2). Others relate to the days of slavery and hypothesize that if humans can be cloned, it makes them property, items that can be sold. The main arguments against cloning stem from the idea of eugenics, founded by Francis Galton (1822-1910). He believed that the human species could be improved by mating with those who have desirable traits and leaving those with undesirable traits alone (Gr ay 84). Nazi Germany advocated eugenics in a horrifying way. In the beginning, Hitler targeted Germans, not Jews. The handicapped, mentally ill, and others with undesirable traits were sterilized so as not to reproduce. When Hitler turned on the Jews, one mans view of the perfect society threatened the world (Gray 84-85). Because cloning offers parents the prospects of genetically altering their children, eugenics of this caliber leads into another argument against cloning. There were several evidences to show that IMC did not provide a safety and proper working environment for its staff and contractors: Zinc buffer stocks were stored everywhere even blocking the walkways and emergency exits. Those pollutions certainly affected the health of the local citizens. ii. Exploiting the local electricity Due to the failure on building the own power station, the plant drew power from the public electricity supplier and lead to a fluctuating power supply in the local area. Obviously, IMC did not take the local villages into account to its practices. Its actions were not ethical because it only concerned on profit-making and totally ignore the people affected by its operation. 3. Issue of Environmental Protection i. Dumping the waste into a wood When the crushing machinery broke down, the plant decided to dump the waste into a wood. It was totally an irresponsible decision which destroyed the environment. ii. Releasing Greenhouse Gases In order to increase output, IMC modified the pre-product plant, which resulted in the release of sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere. And the unsound roof collapsing event also lead to release carbon monoxide. As we see, IMC never care about the environmental problem caused by its operation. 4. Issue of product quality and In order to maintain a ‘non-stop’ operation of the plant, IMC would not make reprisals for poor quality products and continue to send those products to customers.
